Topsoil is the surface horizon of the soil
that supports and nourishes the vegetation. It consists essentially of four
main elements that are organic matter, clay, silt and sand.
The proportion of
each of these elements can be extremely variable, which indicates a wide
variety of topsoil. A plant is characterized by the essential presence of a
multitude of living beings and a weight content of organic material rangingbetween 1% and 6%. When this content exceeds 6%, the land is considered organic
substrate (compost, peat.), and when less than 1% organic matter, the soil is
